TIL that in the 1952 polio epidemic in Denmark, mortality was over 85 per cent due to a shortage of respirators. Dr Bjorn Ibsen invented a new kind of ventilator, proved it worked and then recruited thousands of volunteers to hand-pump them for weeks (they were fully manual). Mortality fell to 26%.

TIL, FDR asked singer Eddie Cantor if he could get a million people to send in a dollar to support polio research. He replied that it would be easier to ask for dimes. By the end of the month, the White House had received 2.68 million dimes ($268k) and the March of Dimes began.

TIL a Polish man received a building permit for a single-family home in the 1980s, he then spent his fortune building a 52-room castle, with 365 windows and 12 turrets. Once the authorities found out, they put an end to construction, he's still fighting with them now, 35 years later, to complete it.

TIL that in order to arrest two Russian hackers, the FBI created a fake startup company called Invita, and invited them to the U.S. for a “job interview”. The two men accepted and were arrested. They had hacked into the networks of at least 40 U.S. companies and then tried to extort money.
